Erik Bakke

The fourteen monoprints of Erik Bakke's series "100 Years of Freedom" were printed in the summer of 2009 with Smith Andersen Editions, Palo Alto, California. Each print is mixed media on Somerset Satin Radiant White paper of preprint dimensions 35 x 46 3/4 inches.

Each print starts with a diptych of the figure of Ishi. Ishi is depicted as he was photographed in Oroville, California in August of 1911 immediately after leaving his solitary life, in a nature no longer inhabited by his people, and coming into the culture of 20th Century America.

Special thanks to Paula Kirkeby for the invitation to do (and generous support of) the project. Many thanks to Master Printer Kathryn Kain and artist Erik C. Madsen for their extensive help in the physical realization of the project; and, also, warm thanks to Melissa Behravesh the Associate Director of Smith Andersen Editions.
